What is the best month to visit Barcelona?
May, June and September are the best months to visit Barcelona. Temperature is fairly good but not too hot (around 25°C -30°C). Better don’t go in August since it’s the hottest month and most of the local businesses are closed since local people take holidays to go outside the city.
Barcelona could also be a nice winter destination. Although you won’t be able to swim in the beach, the weather may be warmer than in the rest of European countries. Tourism is also lower from November to March, so you will have to queue less to get into some attractions and you may enjoy more some landmarks with less people around.
Is it safe to walk in Barcelona at night?
Barcelona is a safe city, however it has a bad reputation for having a lot of pickpockets. Use your common sense when being in busy areas, such as the center and touristic places and don’t show any valuables too much.
Whenever you are travelling on the tube, keep your bag close to you. Barcelona is not a dangerous city, however you need to be careful with your belongings whenever you take the public transport or in touristic areas.
At night time, try to avoid dark and narrow streets if you are walking alone. In the center, watch up for pickpockets, make sure your stuff is not visible at all since it’s very easy to get distracted.
What should I visit in Barcelona for the first time?
The main landmarks you should not miss in Barcelona are: La Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell, Casa Mila (La Pedrera), Casa Batllo, Placa Catalunya, Las Ramblas, The Gothic and El Born districts (the old city area), La Barceloneta beach, Montjuic and El camp Nou (if you are a Barca supporter).
Have a look at our trip planner and see what’s the best option for your trip. Don’t forget to enjoy some spanish and catalan typical food during your visit!
Where should I stay in Barcelona for the first time?
If you want to stay very central, try to find a place close to Plaça de Catalunya or Passeig de Gracia.
La Sagrada Familia and Poble Sec are also close areas to the centre with excellent transport links. If you don’t mind to be slightly outside of the city center (around 30 minutes walking), look for accomodations around Pl. Espanya or Les Glories, most likely it will be cheaper there.
If what you want is to stay next to the beach, try to find a place in the Ciutat vella district or Poblenou areas.
Barcelona is a safe city, however if you are not familiar with areas and streets, try to avoid zones like El Raval (in the centre) and El Maresme-Forum (next to the beach)- most of the pickpockets are around these areas.
How can you travel around the city?
Barcelona is a small city (compared to others, such as London or NY). The best way to move around the city is either walking or by tube.
The public transport in Barcelona works really well. Try to avoid taking the tube during pick time, from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m.
If you are not planning to take the tube more than 10 times, get a T-casual ticket. It’s the cheapest option and what local people uses the most. It costs 11,35 € and includes 10 journeys (1.14€ per trip).
The card can be use only ones at the time, which means you can give the ticket to someone else to use it as long as it is not used at the same time on the same trip. In other words, each of you will need a T-casual ticket to take the tube when travelling together, however you can give your ticket to someone else if you know you won’t need it that day.
Where to buy it? At any tube vending machines (except for ticket machines at the airport tube stations).
Check out the ‘Hola Barcelona Travel Card’ options if you prefer to be safe and have unlimited journeys during your trip. These tickets are done for tourists that want to be free to use the public transport as many times as they want during their trip. Where can I buy a ticket for the tube?
Any ticket can be bought from the vending machines at the tube station. Some newspaper kiosks or tobacco shops may also sell them.
If you are at the airport, you can get your ticket from the vending machines at the entrance of the train (RENFE) at the Terminal 2 or ask to the tobacconist shop before leaving the terminal. Remember that you won’t be able to use the T-casual ticket if you are taking the tube at the airport (but you can use it for the train and public buses).
Zone 1 covers all Barcelona, you won’t need to buy additional zones unless you are traveling outside the city.
Keep in mind, that you won’t be charge twice if you when changing lines or transport, you have 75 minutes between the first and last validation.
A police officer may ask you to show your ticket when traveling to make sure you paid, that’s why is very important to keep it until the end of your journey. The fine for not having a valid tube ticket is up to 6.000€.
Does the Barcelona tube work at night time?
Usually, Barcelona tube operates Friday nights until 02.00 a.m. and all Saturday night. However, due to Covid-19, this services has been temporarily cancelled. The tube is now working until midnight.
As alternative you can also use the night bus service, however we highly recommend to use the tube when possible, since it’s much more faster.
Usually the waiting time between tubes is about 3 minutes during day time, and up to 10 minutes at night.
Which airport is the best to go to Barcelona?
Barcelona-El Prat is the main airport for Barcelona, which sometimes it’s also called BCN airport. It’s located quite close to the city (it takes around 30 minutes to be in the city center by tube, train or car).
Many people wonder if it’s worth buying a ticket to Girona Airport and Reus Airport, since flights are usually cheaper there. From our opinion is not worth it. Both airports are far from Barcelona, and a taxi will cost you a lot of money, as a cheaper option, you can take a train or bus, but it will take you around 1:30h – 2h to get to Barcelona.
How to get from Barcelona airport to the city centre?
f you have already bought a ticket to Barcelona-El Prat airport, you may be wondering how to get to the city center, see the options below:
The train is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get to the city centre.
The train station is located outside the terminal 2. If you are landing at the terminal 1, take the free shuttle service that will take you to the terminal 2.
The first train is at 05:42 and last train at 23:38. Check out which train station is the best to stop, if you are staying in the centre, Passeig de Gràcia or Sants may be the closest one.
How long it takes? The train takes around 20 minutes to get to the centre (Passeig de Gràcia) and there is a train every 30 minutes.
How much does it cost? A single ticket costs 5,15€ and it can be bought from any vending machine at the entrance of the train. However, you may want to consider a ‘Hola Barcelona Travel Card’ option if you are planing to use the tube during your trip (any ‘Hola Barcelona’ card includes the return ticket to the airport).
The T-Casual ticket is not valid on the train to and from Barcelona airport to the city centre (although many people use it). That’s why you won’t be able to buy it from the vending machines at the Airport.
Many people wonder if there is a tube station at the Barcelona airport. The answer is yes, and it can be taken from both terminals (T1 and T2). However there is only one line operating, L9 (orange line), which at the moment, doesn’t take you straight to the centre of Barcelona.
Check out the Airport tube line to see if this works for you.
How much does it cost?
Using the tube at the airport has an additional cost. That’s why the T-Casual ticket cannot be used for the stops Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2. A single Airport ticket costs €5.15 and it can be bought from any vending machine at the entrance of the station.
As alternative to the single ticket, you can buy a ‘Hola Barcelona Travel Card’. This card includes unlimited journeys and it’s tailored for the days you need to spend in Barcelona, for example a ‘Hola Barcelona Travel Card’ for 2 days will cost you €16.30 and this will also include the tube ticket from and to the airport.
There are two different buses that will take you from the airport to the city centre.
- Aerobús. It’s one of the best options when going to the city center. Check out which stop is the closest to your destination at the Aerobus official website. The journey takes around 30 minutes and the ticket costs 10,20 € return (5,90 € one way). Buy your ticket online.
- TMB-Bus number 46. This is a public bus that goes to the city center in about 45 minutes. I takes longer than the Aerobús since it does many more stops on its way. You can use your T-casual ticket for this journey, however remember to buy it beforehand since you won’t be able to purchase it at the bus.
It’s very easy to differentiate both buses since Public transport (TMB) is red and white, while the Aerobús is blue.
- By taxi: Getting to the city centre by taxi will costs around 40€. There are many taxi companies in Barcelona. One of the most populars is Radio Taxi 033 or the Free Now App. The official taxis in Barcelona are yellow and black cars.
- By Uber or Cabify: There has been so much going on with these taxi alternatives in Barcelona. In theory, nowadays Uber and Cabify are not operating in the city due to few regulations. If you manage to use their service, you may have to wait for 15-minute delay before the car comes to pick you up due to few government decisions.
